I have been making some enquiries as to the

possibility of effecting Mr. Lister's object by other means means, and Mr. Silva of this Department has drawn my attention to

a very neat coin used in the Straits Settlements-a half

cent ( of which I enclose a specimen )- which I have every

reason to believe would be a welcome audition to our local

currency.

4.

I have made personal enquiry of various Chinese

Bankers and Compradores, and the Registrar General has at

my request done so also, and the persons we have consulted

are all of opinion that the coin would be a popular one

among the Chinese, and a boon to small traders in the

markets and elsewhere.
