I am directed by Lord Knutsford

to acquaint you that in his Lord-

ship's despatch sanctioning the Hong

Kong estimates for 1890 it was sta-

ted that if it were decided that any

renerel increase of salaries should

be given in Hong Kong and if the

rete of exchange for drawing sala-

ries on leave and pensions in this

country should be lowered as a con-

dition of the grant of the increased

selery, the same condition would be

applied to the increases of salary

to the schoolmasters sanctioned in

the respatch.

You were on leave of absence

when that despatch reached the Colo-

ny, but his Lordship presumes that

another brought to your knowledge.
