Proposed Scale of pay for Subordinate Officers on the Gaol Staff engaged in England, and such others as is Excellency the Governor may allow to join in the Colony.
(a.) Warden: $1,440 to $1,680, (pay of Chief Inspector by two biennial increments of $120. (b.) Head Turnkeys: (2) $1,080 to $1,320 by two biennial increments of $120.

Proposed rules for the engagement in England of Officers for Victoria Gaol.
1. Candidates for service on the Victoria Gaol Staff must be unmarried men over 25 and under
of years age.
2. Married quarters will not be provided until after promotion to the rank of 1st class Turnkey.
For the purpose of paying half 3. The pay ou commencement of service is $480 per annum. salary and pension in England the dollar will be taken as equivalent to 4/ and 3/8 respectively.
In case of private remittances no allowance will be made by Government in respect of fall in exchange.
The Examinatipus for these Appointments will, as a rule, be hel. month of August, and Candidates must be between the as and 24 on the first day of August in the year in Examination is held.

3. Each Cadet will receive salary at the rate of $1,500 a ye salary to commence from the day of leaving England, and full sala: the date of his arrival in the Colony. The cost of his passage Colony will be paid, subject to the liability of repayment b mentioned (Secs. 6,7).

Subject to the recommendation of the Superintendent of the Gral and the Gaol Surgeon to the approval of the Governor an Officer can re-engage for a farther ferm of 5 years.
8. At the expiration of cych of these two terms or any subsequent tern of five years service he comes entitled to a return passage home, of in lien thereof a bonus equal to 3 months' pay.
4. While studying Chinese he will be under the control and sup of the Governor of the Colony, who will frame regulations for his month's
study and general duties. Quarters, books, and teachers will be 4 for him at the public expense, and he will be required to attendary on Public Offices for a certain time each day, as may be directed

(a.) And he can apply to the Governor through the Superintendent for permission to return
to the service within a period of vine months.
(b) Should this application be approved he will receive half hy during his absence and a

Officers will be expected to learn at least as much Chinese as will enable them to efficiently their work in the Gaol.
(a.) Provision is made by Government for instructing Officers in Chinese. (b) An allowance of $2 a month in addition to his pay may be drawn by any Officer who
has obtained a Certificate of competency in Chinese.
Each Officer is provided by Government with free quarters, and mess-servants, fuel, light bed and bedding.
He is also provided with two suits of uniform, with boots, cap and helmet every year, and a
three if necessary.

1. He is provided with medical attendance and medicines free: if sick in Hospital a stoppage of 30 cents a day is made from his pay.
If detained in Hospital or absent from duty otherwise than for injuries received on duty for a period of more than 30 days in one year he will for each day's detention or absence after that period be allowed half pay only without further Hospital stoppages.
12 t A deduction of four por cent. is made from the salaries of all those
who enter the Straits Settlements Civil Service, as a contribution to the Widows' and Orphans' Pension Fund.
