I have had under my careful
consideration your Despatches noted in
the margin, in regard to the revision
of the salaries of those officers who
have free quarters.
2. As regards the First Clerk at the Magistracy, since the holder of
this office had no quarters in 1875, I
agree with you that the correct compu-
tation of the revised salary should be ($1920 + 35 per cent, or) $2,592 less
the present value of the Quarters, and
as to that value I am prepared to adopt
the amount given in Mr. Arthur's letter
of appointment, dated 12th February,

should be fixed at $2232 per annum.
3. The fact that Mr. Arthur is
compelled to live in the Quarters pro-
vided for him, which was one of the
