cables, charging £100 per day for the use of the repairing steamer, including the voyages to and from her headquarters, and, in addition, the cost of any cable expended.

An undertaking to maintain a cable for a fixed period is one which hitherto the Companies have declined, but I will refer the point if it is thought desirable.

Sir,

In accordance with your verbal request of 27th instant, I requested the directors to name a lump sum for which they would supply and lay a cable to the Gap Rock, Type B (circa 7 tons per knot) core 130 × 130 lbs, protected ribbon, including 1 knot of 10/012 sq. cable for the Gap Rock shore end, and I inform you that the Companies are prepared to supply and lay the cable as above, together with the 5 miles of land line for the sum of £13,000.
