The time has gone by when a

Government allowance

was

refused to Christian bodies; in

ground that there was some special

theological or political merit in

the Church of England (community not

recognised by other Christian communities).

All Church of England Endowments

date back to a

time when

Church of England alone enjoyed full

citizenship". It seems imperative, as it

were, to recreate an endowment in these

days of religious Equality. If we create this Endowment, it will be hard to resist the demands of other religious

bodies, and the Church of England only one official

among many, not privileged

after amendment Endowments. If the

Government is guided in selecting one

Christian community for endowment by

its numerical insignificance, perhaps

the Church of England is not the first

candidate in that respect.

As to the signers, who signed, probably

them may

not understand. Any-

how the majority

of them can only

have signed in order to oblige their friend. They cannot outweigh the official opposition of the members of Council.
