This is to certify that I examined Mr. Stanley Sutton in Cantonese, the results being as under:-

1. Copy writing- good.

2. Transcribing Chinese characters, marking tones, in Romanized form- fair.

3. Translating from the Chinese text of the Gospel of John (seen work)- very good.

4. Translating from the Chinese text of the Gospel of Matthew (unseen work)- fair.

5. Translating from Ball's Colloquial Phrases English into Chinese, and Chinese into English- both very good.

6. Copying Chinese characters- very good.

7. Writing Chinese characters from dictation - fair.

8. Conversation with a Chinese man- very fair.

Considering that Mr. Sutton has been studying Chinese only nine months, I consider the result of the examination to be highly satisfactory.
