of the Police Force, for the post of Captain Superintendent of Police or of Superintendent of the Gaol, in the event one or other of the two offices becoming vacant, I have the honour to inform Your Lordship that circumstances have come to my knowledge since writing that despatch which have very unexpectedly confirmed my impression as to Major Dempster's unfitness for responsible office here.

2. I regret to say that it is established beyond doubt that when Major Dempster was about to leave the Colony he owed the Contractor, who supplies the Gaol with food, $868. He paid $150 of that sum before his departure and gave the contractor a Promissory Note for the balance dated the 4th April.
