Shortly afterwards I received a letter from Mr Orley (May 1890) bitterly complaining that Mr. Stringer had not forwarded him his share in the profits of the Company for the previous year and I then forced him to bring himself immediately under my personal supervision in the expected hope of putting matters straight, allowing him the advantage of extended business; unfortunately the investment proved a failure through Mr. Stringer's incapacity "I might say undesirability to reveal the mystery which he alone comprehended and arrant foolishness still persuaded me to advance the only remaining savings I possessed, and when trouble rushed me into the vortex from which I had no possible means of extricating myself.

With reference to the latter part of the charge in my having immediately informed the head of my Department of my adjudication in bankruptcy required by Rule 5 of the Treasury Minute of the 30th of November 1868 and which was republished by Circular No. 144 of the 23rd of September 1889, I must confess ignorance. Possibly the Circular in question came to my hands but I have no recollection of having signed or initialed the Circular and failed (as I did) to notify the Honourable the Surveyor General it was entirely an oversight on my part and I feel that no room is left me but...
