not see his way to approve of the application I had made for increase of salary although he very kindly informed me that I might make representation of claim for such increase to Your Lordship.

1. A. That Your Lordship in C.O. Despatch No. 117 of 1887 mentions the sum of £600 a year as a suitable salary.

B. That the Sanitary Board recommended, in forwarding the Estimates for the year 1891, that the salary of the Colonial Veterinary Surgeon be increased by six hundred dollars ($600) per year.

C. That the annually increasing work and responsibility of this office places my appointment at least on an equal footing with, if not at a similar standing to, similar appointments in the Home Government, putting aside the consideration of residence in a tropical climate.

D. That at the time of my appointment the Sanitary Department formed a sub-department of the Public Works, and since its severance the salaries of the professional officers have been considerably increased without any corresponding increase to the officers under the Sanitary Board.

2. The duties performed by the Colonial Veterinary Surgeon are as follows:-

A. To inspect all cattle on their importation into the colony, and sheep, goats, swine and other animals when deemed necessary.
