I embodied Mr. Lister's remarks in a further letter, which the Hon. Acting Colonial Treasurer thereupon sent to the Hon. Acting Colonial Secretary, and requested permission to make out the increased amount forthwith, the matter has been submitted to His Excellency the Officer administering the Government who - notwithstanding that the alteration was made by the Governor and has been approved by His Lordship - refuses to sanction the payment.

I have therefore memorialized Lord Knutsford on the subject, and asked that I may be permitted to receive the increased salary from January 1st last in accordance with the Estimates.

I would beg you to kindly use your influence with His Lordship to secure this advance for me, and submit the following reasons why I venture to approach you on the matter.

1st. Your well-known love of Fair play. 2d that the increased amount was put in the Estimates after my appointment, and consequently could have been intended for none but myself, certainly not for Mr. Hooper who had left the service more than six months previously.
