the Estimates with His Excellency the Governor, Sir G. Wm. Des Voeux, pressed for an advance. You had grounds that I was married and had a family, and that $2500 was not sufficient remuneration for the responsible nature of the work I should be called upon to perform. His Excellency, acceding to Mr. Lister's earnest request, took a pen and with his own hand altered the $2,500 to $3600, which latter amount was entered in the Estimates to be submitted to The Right Hon. Lord Knutsford for his Lordship's approval.

I arrived here on 30th November, and about Dec. 5th, Mr. Lister told me of this alteration, and informed me that the Estimates would be approved in a few days later, and if approved, I should be paid on the increased rate from January 19.

The Despatch from Lord Knutsford approving the Estimates was received here early in June, and a day or two after I saw Mr. Lister, who informed me again that as the Estimates had been returned approved on July 1st, I should receive my $300 salary for the month of June, and arrears at the rate of $91.67 per month - being the difference between $300 salary per Estimates and $208.33 the amount I had received monthly - for the 5 months from Jan: 1st to May 31st. Upon this assurance I entered into a lease for a house.
