Proposed Survey of Hong Kong Memorandum
With reference to the further correspondence respecting the Survey of Hong Kong which has been forwarded to me for an expression of my views, especially in regard to the proposal to supplement the Trigonometrical Survey with a Geological and a Revenue Survey, I have the honour to report :-
The large scale surveys made by the Ordnance Survey Department are to all intents and purposes Revenue Surveys; the use of the plans is compulsory for Land Registration in England, and in Ireland they are used as the basis for all purposes of local assessment and valuation. A specimen of the 300 plans and of the 3500 plans is forwarded herewith for the information of the Colonial Government. The Geological Survey should not be undertaken until the Land Survey is sufficiently advanced to allow tracings of ground to be supplied to the Geologist.
