necessary to increase the local Audit Staff He therefore proposes subject to the concurrence of the Secretary of State to inform Mr. Nicolle that the duties which he and his Clerk will be required to perform, will be those of general supervision rather than of continuous and minute detail examination, that, with this object he should from time to time, test in detail the accuracy of the Revenue Account and see that the Regulations laid down are observed, and that all the documents necessary for the proper examination of the Revenue are produced.

In a previous letter, Mr Nicolle contemplated carrying on the work of Revenue Audit with the assistance of W. Ribeiro, who, he observed, "has an intimate knowledge of the Colonial Revenue and the methods of collecting it, and he added that this arrangement would give him an opportunity of ascertaining the actual amount of work to be done and the clerical assistance that would be required.
