With reference to a letter from this Department dated 11th instant, and to Sir R. Herbert's reply of the 16th upon the subject of the Audit of the Accounts of Hong Kong, I am directed by the Comptroller and Auditor General to state, for the Secretary of State's information, that he has since been in communication with M. A. C. Nicolle, the Auditor of Cyprus, who, from his experience in that Colony, appeared to the Comptroller and Auditor General to be well qualified to undertake the duties of a more important post, and that he has ascertained the willingness of Mr. Nicolle to proceed to Hong Kong, upon the understanding that he should receive, as Auditor of that Colony, a Salary of 4000 Dollars per annum.
The Comptroller and Auditor General has accordingly appointed Mr. Nicolle
