Copies of corresp. between this dept & the W.O. regarding the necessity of the War Dept. acquiring the land on the Island hitherto used for that purpose, from which you will learn that I consider that the buildings erected on the Island for the Lazaretto should be compensated. The state to receive as compensation is more than the value of the land.
I observe that the letter from the W.O. refers to the Hulk now being constructed by the Col. Eng. for use as an Epidemic Hospital, as being a "Quarantine Hulk". I presume that this is a verbal error on the part of the War Dept., and that other arrangements will be made for providing a substitute for the Quarantine ground hitherto at Stonecutters Island.
