In reply to your letter, Mr. Johnstone says that the cost of the Lazaretto for the year is $20,000. Twenty thousand Dollars, and the Contract price of the hulk, which is being constructed, is $58,500. Fifty eight thousand, five hundred Dollars.
$78,500 Seventy eight thousand five hundred Dollars will therefore represent the Sum which will indemnify this Government for the cost. But the latter does not include the changes the whole expense involved as the upkeep of the hulk will be a considerable Annual Expense while the maintenance of the Lazaretto necessitated comparatively trifling expenditure.
