IRLOR (Red 29 AUG 90)
I am directed by the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 23rd instant, stating that Lord Knutsford would be glad if the instalment of subsidiary coin for arrival at Hong Kong on 1st January next could, if possible, be increased from $200,000 to $350,000.
In reply I am to acquaint you that the Deputy Master of the Mint reports that there is reason to hope that the Mint will be in a position to execute the additional coinage required by the Government of Hong Kong. He adds however that the heavy demands for Imperial coin which always occur towards the latter part of the year, the uncertainty of the demands, and the necessity for suspending coinage operations, in order to effect necessary repairs, render it impracticable for him at the present date to definitely undertake the work
The Under Secretary of State
Colonial office,
I am,
sir,
Your obedient servant,
