Women continuing to present themselves voluntarily for Examination, and as far as could ascertain, amongst the better class of prostitutes, this seems to be the case.
There is an increase in the amount and severity of venereal disease amongst our men, and the amount of it contracted by the crews of Foreign men-of-war that visit the port, compared with the few cases of disease detected at the examinations or treated in the Lock Hospital.
Though the better class of prostitutes may be more free from disease through the Examination, it is impossible that it can now touch the lower sorts of Women to whom the men of the Fleet resort, who when they are no longer able to go on through disease, I am told, go to Chinese doctors, or to Canton for care.
The average number of Women treated within the Lock Hospital does not appear to increase, indeed there were only three patients there when I visited it a fortnight ago.
