I notice with regret that

5. With reference to

the vote for the Audit Department was objected to by unofficial members of the Council, who considered that the recent discovery of serious defalcations in the Post Office showed the need for efficient audit, and that the system lately introduced would afford it. I do not doubt that when it has had a fair trial, this system will be recognised as efficient in detecting irregularities.

6. Before sanctioning the vote for $19,019 for Electric Lighting of the Streets referred to in par. 1 of the despatch under acknowledgement, I shall be glad to be informed how it is proposed to substitute Electricity for gas in lighting the streets, what parts of the Town, and what will be the total increase.
