some pirates may have been amongst the crew or passengers. I also requested Commodore Church to despatch a gun-boat to the spot where it was thought the pirates had first landed in case any piece of wreckage could be discovered. The Commodore did this, and Her Majesty's Steamer "Ling Feng" left Hongkong for this purpose on the morning of the 12th of December. She returned to Hong Kong on the evening of the 14th December 1890.

5. On the afternoon of the 11th, after the "Tsing Yi" returned to Hongkong, I went on board as I was desirous of forming an opinion of what had taken place, not merely from what I heard, but from what I could personally see.
