He then left the saloon and was entering his Cabin at the top of the Companion ladder when he was shot through the breast. He managed to stagger into his Cabin where he died about half an hour afterwards. The pirates in the meantime continued their work of pillage.

The passengers were going or hearing what had happened left the saloon and endeavoured to conceal themselves in their Cabins on either side. The pirates then sent the second officer to inform them that if they came out and proceeded to the Captain's Cabin they would not be molested. This they thought it safer to do, and they left their Cabins accordingly. They were then escorted by a guard of pirates to the Captain's Cabin where they were shut up and remained for eight hours guarded by sentries.
