Swatow at eight

o'clock on the

morning of 10th instant having

on board four or five European

passengers

and over two hundred

Chinese deck passengers. Among

the latter were several Chinamen

from San Francisco and the

Straits homeward bound with

the savings they had accumulated

during several years.

All went on

quietly

- until the passengers went down

to luncheon. This was about 1

P.M. when the vessel was about

fifty miles from Hongkong.

Shortly after

a band of from thirty to forty

from among the Chinese passengers suddenly

made their appearance

on deck.

These were all armed with

revolvers
