Colonial Surgeon.

"The office of apothecary

was created

before 1875 and previous to 1879 was

filled

by candidates selected locally. The salary

of the last officer

so appointed was $1140

per annum exclusive of

an allowance for

house rent. When this officer retired in 1878 the office

was reconstituted the salary

fixed at $1440 a year rising to $1920 with

free quarters fuel & light. His departure

was sanctioned in order that an

officer might be selected whose scientific attainments would allow of his undertaking the analyses required in cases of poisoning. The increase subsequent to my appointment in the amount of my

duties due to the recently sanctioned re-arrangement of work I have already referred to in my letter of the 14th inst.

The office of Asst. Apothecary was
