Special reference may be made to that of Major-General Gordon, the Superintendent of Victoria Gaol, as being different to any others. It appears that this officer represented that his official residence, which consists of four or five good-sized rooms, was not sufficient for his family, and he consequently obtained an allowance of $840 a year for the hire of a house. It would appear from what General Gordon states that certain members of his family do not reside in the Colony, and therefore the grant practically amounts to the payment of £125 a year for the rent of a house for such portion of his family as is resident in England.
The Select Committee have recommended that this allowance be absorbed in the increment granted, which however reduces the percentage received below.
