12 JAN REG 12 JAN 31;

I have the honor to solicit

that your Lordship may

be

pleased

to inform the Government of Hongking, whether it is your

intention, that I should at anytime act as sole Deputy Registrar. I understood from Mr. Branston in my appointment in 1882 as Accountant and Deputy Registrar, that I was only to assist the other Deputy Registrar, if required, and to attend principally to accountant's work.

The work of the Deputy Registrar and Accountant has so much increased since 1882, that when I took vacation leave in 1888, I paid for an Acting Accountant Deputy Registrar out of my own pocket.

I have the honor to be

Your Lordship's most obedient,

I Barff

Accountant and Deputy Registrar
