I come therefore to point out to you that it is the duty of officers administering the Colony to give explanation as to the manner in which any money drawn from a Service vote, is appropriated otherwise than the object of the Service for which it is voted, as reported to the Governor.

(121)-8576--0000-6-90 Date. No. 413 1890 15th. Previous Paper. 1749/2 disposed of 1/2 3/90 Subsequent Paper. [23/90-1 No 24098.

DESPATCH. No. 24698 RECE REG 22 DEC 30 Salary of Colonial Surgeon. Refers to Mr. Ayres' letter calling attention to misstatement as to amount of salary.

(Minutes.) We did not find the amount in the Blue Book but by entry in 1598/09.90 (11.26) which puts his salary at $4800. See Mr Graham's pencil minute on p. 26 of above-mentioned paper, opposite Col. Jurgen's pay, and par. 12(8) of despatch in that paper.

But before answering the present despatch, wait for the Estimates for 1891 in which the revised salaries will appear, in case any alteration may then be given with the decision of the Secretary of State for reconsidering not to raise any Medical Dept. salaries in this Colony.
