Evaluation found that the individual cases differed very slightly from one another; in nearly every case the symptoms were the same as also their duration and progress.
In the main the following are the salient points in the symptoms, progress and treatment of the cases under my charge. Symptoms and Progress.
The onset of the disease was sudden in most cases. A slight chill's feeling of malaise were the premonitory symptoms - following this hard, convulsive and hacking cough, accompanied by fever, the temperature reaching 101° to 103° F.
Associated with these was a dull, constant and dragging pain in the back, along the spine, across the loins and in the limbs; frontal headache and feeling of fulness in the head; redness of the conjunctiva, mouth and throat. In some cases further catarrhal symptoms occurred such as sneezing, dryness of the throat, orbital pain, a feeling of tightness and constriction of the chest, slight dyspnoea. All appetite was lost, the bowels were confined, urine scanty, tongue covered with fur, the pulse rapid. At the same time there was great depression of spirits followed by extreme prostration.
Progress.
In the majority of cases the disease was at its height on the 2nd day and declined gradually. Though extreme weakness and debility were complained of, the patients made a quick recovery. None of the cases developed any bronchial or pulmonary complications nor any other of the more dangerous sequelae. There were no deaths.
