The Bishop replied admitting the marriage had been irregularly performed, but stating it had been celebrated by a young Clergyman who considered that the spirit of the law had been sufficiently complied with by notice of the marriage having been given to the Registrar, and who in doing what he did had no malicious intention of breaking the law.
I wrote to the Bishop acknowledging the receipt of his letter, and stating that I felt sure he would agree with me in thinking that Clergymen of every denomination should do all in their power to comply with the requirements of the law in such an important matter as that of marriage.
