of Mr George Peebles to be Government Marine Surveyor in this Colony, and to the advance of £150 made to him in

England, I have

the honour to inform Your Lordship that in consideration

of the fact that Mr Peebles

paid for

his passage to the Colony out of his own

funds, I have made an exception in his favour of the usual rule by

which such advances are repayable within twelve months, and approved of his refunding the advance in instalments of $50 per mensem:

At the market rate of exchange therefore it will take some 18 months to pay off the whole sum.

I would suggest for Your Lordship's consideration that when advances on account of salary are made by the Crown Agents, there should
