I am sorry to trouble you about a private matter and respectfully requesting your tender assistance and apology for what I fear will be cause of annoyance. I refer to a debt incurred through my becoming security for money owing by the young man S. F. Berkeley lately employed in the Department.
I think, within your knowledge, that Berkeley was arrested on the 21st of December last at the instance of S. Brown, Surveyor General.
