and for these positions neither special nor expensive previous training is necessary. Should it please your Lordship to grant us the increases specified on either Table "A" or "B", our salaries will even then only bear favourable comparison with theirs.

18. We may further remark that the First Clerk at the Magistracy was formerly a master in the Central School, and left it to get his present position as it is a more lucrative one. We would also further point out that the Officers mentioned in Table "C" are required, by agreement, as we are, to undertake the difficult study of Chinese.

19. Under the circumstances set forth, we sincerely trust that it may please your Lordship to re-consider the matter and to grant us the increase of 35% either on the basis detailed in Table "A" or on that in Table "B".
