January 1886. I received my appointment as Assistant Engineer at a salary of $2280 and rising to $2760, and at a time when the work in the Department was heavy, and more than the exacting Staff of Officers could perform.

Subsequent to my appointment on the Public Works Staff, I have on several occasions attended to the duties of the Surveyor General at the Land Sales and Land Surveys, in addition to the duties of Assistant Engineer, and which were undertaken by request of the Surveyor General, for the benefit and convenience of the service, at a time when the Survey Branch was undermanned, and not as any portion of the duties appertaining to my appointment.
