Public Works Department
6 October 1890
To the Public Works-
On the 19th February last I had the honour of addressing you on a subject connected with my position in the new organization of this Department of the Colony, and I have to thank you for your kind reference of my case to Lord Knutsford G.C.M.G., Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for the Colonies.
I would now beg to enclose for your information a copy of Extract from despatch which has been handed to me, authorising a position which in grade and rank does not correspond to my present appointment of Assistant Engineer, and basing objection to further promotion on information that has been supplied to Lordship, which is totally incorrect, viz:- that my original appointment to this Colony in 1885 was "Foreman of Works" at a salary of $1600.
I would further beg to state that I have been compelled to reply to this Despatch and herewith enclose a copy of my reply.
I have worked very hard in this Department, and for some three years single-handed, without the late General The Right Honble Sir A. Z. Ponsonby G.C.B.
