remaining Gaol Blocks, and other buildings, in the same manner that has been so admirably carried out at the large convict prison near London, at Wormwood Scrubs.

I have had neither opportunity of going into the details of the larger scheme nor in the present stage of the Gaol question does it appear necessary to do so. I may however state that I roughly estimate the cost of the Gaol complete at $320,000. If convict labour were employed on a large scale, as above suggested, the cost would be considerably reduced.

I have thus endeavoured as briefly as possible to describe the salient features of the three expedients which appear to me to offer a solution, more or less perfect, of the difficulties which beset the question of Gaol extension. They may be summed up as follows:
1st New Block on present site with alterations of existing Buildings, by which convicts may be lodged in the new Block on the separate system. By using the present buildings on the associated system, a total of about 700 prisoners may be accommodated. Estimated cost of alterations and additions to Gaol $110,000.
2nd New Block on Bonham Road site to accommodate 270 convicts on the separate system, the existing Gaol being still used chiefly on the associated system, with a few separate cells, giving accommodation to 430 convicts, making a total of 700. Estimated...
