present day, and it would leave the present site available for Police premises which later will probably require enlargement. But on the other hand the cost will be great, the erection of such a building would extend over a considerable period of time and at the present moment, when the Colony has been called upon to double its Military Contribution and really knows not to what further expense it may be put to when the garrison is increased, I should hesitate in committing it to the cost of a New Gaol.

I may further add that a strong feeling against building a new Prison exists among many of the Community and I feel pretty sure that all the unofficial Members of Council would be opposed to it. Should your Lordship think however, that a new building is indispensable, I would strongly...
