Surveyor General in keeping

effective check and control over
the Stores accounts,
I should further
add that the appointment of a thoroughly trained Public Works Accountant is the more important
and pressing
as the
Praya
Works
are about to commence, and
involving as they do an expenditure
of about half a million Sterling,
it is, in
my opinion,
a
matter
of primary importance that a good system of accounts should
be introduced at the commencement
of the work. Mr. Remedios, the Praya Clerk, will, I have little
doubt, be able to
carry out efficiently
such a system under the supervision of the Public Works
Accountant.

Stores Branch.
Before submitting
any definite scheme for the Stores Establishment, it will be necessary
to decide whether it is intended to serve for the Public Works Department only, or whether (as I infer from the Despatch) it is proposed to include the Stores of other Government Departments. The Stores of the Sanitary Branch (Mr. Chadwick's) have been temporarily detached from the Public Works Department. Is it intended that they should remain separate or be included in a general Government Store? The same question arises as regards the Works of the Praya.
