But whether a Chinaman can or cannot be married to all intents and purposes to more than one woman at the same time, there seems no doubt that in addition to the first wife he can take a concubine or chính and that such a woman holds a very different position than does a concubine under our English law, her children, I understand, being with few exceptions on a footing with those of the ch'i or lawful wife.
