that a Chinaman may lawfully have more wives than one, but I explained in my despatch the doubts which apparently exist as to how far a second or third woman who may be taken to live with a Chinaman as his concubine is to be regarded as a wife, when he has already been married to the first wife according to the prescribed formalities.

I may state that on the 30th of July last a Chinaman was charged with bigamy before the Supreme Court of Penang, and the very question at issue arose, viz. whether he could under Chinese law be duly married to more than one woman at the same time.
