The classification of the brothels is regulated mainly by the localities in which they exist. Hollywood Road, Possession Street, East and West Street and Square Street rank in the order of their mention as regards character of the brothels. Hollywood Road and Possession Street contain the first-class brothels, East Street and West Street the less fashionable brothels and Square Street the inferior brothels. Those in Hollywood Road and Possession Street are frequented by Merchants and rich shopkeepers, those in East Street and West Street by domestic boys, Chinese Constables and so forth, and those in Square Street coolie class. No discredit attaches to a Chinese for frequenting a brothel, and the brothel is regarded as the recognized rendezvous for friends and for entertainments of all kinds. There is no discredit in a married man going to a brothel, not in his having connection with the inmates, and to do so is a matter of everyday occurrence not only in China but in Hongkong. It occasionally happens that an inmate of a brothel will find herself enceinte. In that case, it becomes the duty of the man who is decided upon as the father, regarding which point it is not so easy to determine owing to the practice of the prostitutes engaging themselves to as many men as possible, to redeem her and to make her his concubine. The child thus born takes the surname of the father; should such an event happen before the father is married to a regular wife, the proper course would be for him to wait until married to a wife and then to redeem the mother.
