Posts together amounted to $5760, and under the new scheme of salaries this would have been raised to about $8776.

Out of the total salary $5760 the sum of $3840 I don't approve being assigned within Office of P.M.G., but in separating Man Offices I do not approve of so large an amount as ($3840 increased by 35 per cent, i.e.) $5184, being attached to the P.M.G..

After P.M.G. I consider that that officer should have a salary of $3600, but that he may have in addition, the quarters free of rent.

$720 referred to in June 6 despatch 2751 which will be set free by removing the Treasury from the Post Office, that on the case Lord Carnarvon in his despatch no. 14 of 14 Feb. 1877 disallowed the grant because of free quarters. His salary had originally been fixed on the assumption that he had no other emoluments.

It is indicated in that despatch, it is more usual in cases when an officer is required to reside near his work.
