I have the honour to forward the enclosed applications for the vacant appointment of Postmaster.

2. I have in despatch No 262 of this day's date recommended to Your Lordship that the offices of Treasurer and Postmaster should no longer be amalgamated, although I have mentioned, I do not see much objection to the Postmaster General being also Collector of Stamp Revenue.

4. Enclosures.

795 Mr Barff is now accountant and deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court. He came to this Colony as Assistant Postmaster General in 1868 and was Acting Postmaster General in 1882. He has a considerably longer standing in the Service than the other candidates, but I am disposed to think that he is better adapted to the work of Accountant at the Supreme Court than to perform the duties of Postmaster General.

4. Mr. Barff
