of the department, absconded and on his departure it was discovered by the late Mr Lister that there was a deficiency of moneys, for which he should have accounted, of over $40,000. Barradas escaped to Manila, a warrant was issued for his arrest and after little difficulty he was handed over by the Spanish authorities and charged with having stolen very large sums of money while in the Government service.

The case was tried before the Supreme Court last week, and although on most of the counts the Crown was not successful, the prisoner was convicted on one count and was sentenced to three years imprisonment with hard labour.
