needed, and as an instance of the inconvenience which arises owing to the absence of a survey, I may mention that until one is made Major General Barker informs me that it is impossible to locate on a map the exact positions of various Defence works, or to define the area in their neighbourhood which should be kept clear of buildings so as not to obstruct the line of fire.

I need scarcely add that both in the interest of this Government, as well as in that of the Military, the sooner such points are determined the better.
