The 2nd Assistant (whose salary was $50 a month) having resigned in December last in order to take up more remunerative employment in a mercantile Firm, Mr J.B. Eça da Silva, a Clerk in the Public Works Department, was in the beginning of January appointed to his place with an increase of $20 a month in salary, in view of the fact that he had been examined by the Director of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company, and pronounced to possess sufficient knowledge of Telegraphy to assist in working the direct cable which, as Your Lordship is aware, now connects the Observatory with the town of Victoria.
