the 26th of May, returning the evening of the 28th.

The Viceroy Li Han-Chang had previously intimated to Her Britannic Majesty's Consul, Mr Alabaster, that he would be glad to see me and him accordingly paid an official visit shortly after my arrival, which he returned the next day previous to my departure. His Excellency received me very graciously and requested me to lunch with him, which I did.

I may mention that the Viceroy is the elder brother of the well-known Chinese Statesman Li Hung-Chang, and it is no doubt desirable that cordial relations should exist between him and the Government of this Colony.

I have the honour to be,

My Lord,

Your Lordship's most obedient humble servant,

Herning
