prepared to accept the post of Executive Engineer and Land Surveyor, which it is proposed to give him, conditionally incurring no responsibility on his part for Field Work. In regard to this objection I agree with the observations made by D. Brown, viz. that every official of the Surveyor General's Department should be prepared to carry out such work as the Surveyor General may from time to time direct, provided, of course, that the officer is qualified to perform the duties required of him.

I regret having to trouble Your Lordship in this matter as I was under the full impression, when I wrote my despatch of the 9th of April last, that Mr Malsch was perfectly satisfied with the position given to him in the Scheme
