Mr Mead
I do not suppose the Bishops could compel Messrs. Goldsmith & Co. to undertake the Colonial Chaplain's hours in addition to their own.
Aud casu if they are not willing to help, he might be of opinion that they could not adequately undertake the duty, considering the considerable distances of the churches from one another, ancillary duties besides Church Services, let alone the possibility that they may already have engagements with which we know nothing of.
Colonial Regulation 127 admits of the Colonial Chaplain's having leave, if his health absolutely requires it "without first making adequate and satisfactory provision for the performance of his duties". I would therefore caution the Governor to grant the leave, expressing his hope that he may be able to arrange with the Bishop for the performance of the Services, or part of them, in the Colonial Chaplain's absence, for which the half salary will be available.
(We will be interesting to know whether another Bishop will take his place)

Referring to Fleming's despatch which I had not noticed, a locum tenens was shown on the 8th of June, and that arrangement has been made for the performance of Mr. Jennings's duties in the interval.
I suffer that Mr. Jennings has been at the beck and call of the Government, and was in a refund, which I had decided not to grant.
I had overlooked the last para. of the O.A.G's despatch and I have slightly amended the draft Pr. 17/6 grant.
