No
one without an extensive
local knowledge and experience can say which portions of the survey should be
on the larger
and which to the smaller scale, or those portions which it is important should be first undertaken and those which can be conveniently delayed,
or the amount of detail which it may be desirable to show
on
the
plans. Not only is it in my opinion that the Officer in charge of the Survey should be in communication with the
Colonial Government through the Surveyor General on that and other working details, but I may add that such an arrangement would
prove
a valuable assistance to the
officer in charge of the Survey, as he would have access to a large amount of information
not otherwise obtainable.
I am very doubtful as to the expediency of limiting surveying operations to the six months (October to March inclusive) and of doing all the plotting in England. If the work is carried on continuously
it is not I think improbable that the survey might be completed in
two
years
instead
of three. Although the rains during
the South West Monsoon
there are in the summer
months from April to September inclusive long
