I beg respectfully to submit the following considerations with reference to the proposal for the Trigonometrical Survey contained in the Colonial Office despatch and enclosure.

I should in the first place explain that when advocating a Trigonometrical Survey of the Colony, it was my suggestion that the Ordnance Survey department should be asked to nominate a competent officer, who should have charge of the survey. I did not contemplate carrying out the work by the ordinary staff of the Public Works department. The
